A Waterford Councillor says changes to the concession scheme for post-primary school public transport amount to discrimination against children living in rural Ireland.

Under the scheme, parents are entitled to a suppliment for public transport ranging from 220 euro per family for primary students, up to 650 euro for secondary students.

However in 2011, the system was changed and a rule brought in which stated the child must attend the nearest secondary school to their home to receive the payment.

Councillor Pat Fitzgerald says it's become a problem over the past number of years, especially as it limits the choices of parents and pupils.
