Fianna Fáil’s Cllr. Adam Wyse has been elected as the new Mayor of the Metropolitan District of Waterford following a vote at Monday’s council meeting.
Cllr. Wyse was elected by 11 votes to 6, defeating Sinn Féin’s Cllr. Joeanne Bailey. He was nominated by the outgoing Mayor of Waterford City and County, Cllr. Jason Murphy, while Cllr. Bailey was jointly proposed by Sinn Féin councillors Pat Fitzgerald and Jim Griffin.
This marks a return to the mayoral role for Cllr. Wyse, who previously served as Mayor of Waterford City and County in 2017 at the age of just 22, making him the youngest person ever to hold the office.
Following the vote, Cllr. Wyse thanked his colleagues for their support and said he looks forward to working across the council to represent the people of Waterford during his term.
The election for the Mayor of Waterford City and County is expected to take place in the coming weeks at a meeting of the Plenary Council in City Hall, where councillors from all districts will cast their votes.
