An Bord Pleanála has granted permission for Waterford City and County Council to complete a compulsory purchase order on a prominent building in Waterford City centre.
The building - 29 Great George's Street - is listed as a protected structure.
The property comprises a terraced three-bay three-storey house with a vacant shop front at ground floor level.
It is located within the vicinity of John Roberts' Square and O'Connell Street to the left of the entrance of the George's Court Shopping Centre.
The property is also listed on the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage.
Notice of Waterford City and County Council’s intention to compulsorily acquire the site was served upon the owners/occupiers on February 16th of this year.
This was objected to by the owner of the property - who expressed her reluctance to work with the Council to restore the property, and she requested that the permission would be rejected.
Planning Inspector Frank O'Donnell visited the site in August and concluded that the general appearance of the property was "neglected, unsightly and objectionable".
He was satisfied that it could be classified as derelict.
The application to acquire the city centre building has now been formally granted.
