A new museum in Waterford aimed at offering a children's experience is to be developed in the former men's hostel at 18 Lady Lane.

'Tír na nÓg'- The Land of Young People will be a visitor experience designed for young people, with €7million allocated in funding for the project.

Outlining the concept, Waterford City & County Council have said the former hostel would be converted into a 'life-size dollhouse, with a café and terrace lit by pencil lights on the ground floor.

Additionally, there will be a new lift installed in the building resembling building blocks, and a new fire escape developed in the style of a Meccano set.

It's understood that sensory experiences will be incorporated into the overall plan, with specific days catered for children with intellectual and sensory challenges.

Welcoming the news, Waterford Fine Gael Senator John Cummins said: "Without urgent intervention, this historic building could be lost forever."

He added: "That is why this €7million is so important. Conserving the original fabric and decorative internal features of the building is a critical element on the project."
