The sustained pressures facing hospitality in Waterford have been cited among the reasons for the closure of a popular local café.
The Granary Café on Hanover Street in Waterford City announced last week it was closing with immediate effect.
In a statement to WLR following confirmation of the closure, the team at The Granary Café said the decision to close was “not taken lightly”.
“After careful consideration, we felt that now was the appropriate time to step back, following a prolonged period of challenging trading conditions,” the statement said.
“Like many small hospitality businesses, we have faced sustained pressures in recent years, including rising operating costs, increased overheads, VAT rate, footfall, changes in customer habits after Covid and broader economic uncertainty, all of which have made it increasingly difficult to continue trading in a sustainable way. Despite our best efforts to adapt, it became clear that the current environment no longer allowed the business to operate viably.”
The statement adds that the team are “extremely grateful” to staff, customers, and the wider Waterford community for the loyalty and support shown over the years “which has meant a great deal to us”.
“The Granary Café has been a proud part of the city’s food scene, and we are thankful for the memories and relationships built during that time.”
