Gardaí in Waterford are urging the public to exercise caution following a spate of thefts across the city and county.
Numerous thefts from cars have taken place in various locations throughout recent months.
Crime Prevention Officer Sergeant Deirdre O'Neill outlined further details on this week's Waterford Garda Watch.
"Over the last number of weeks, we have seen an increase in thefts from cars throughout Waterford County with Portlaw, Stradbally, Dungarvan, and Waterford City being targeted. Cash, electronics, and tools have been stolen from vehicles."
"Gardaí in Waterford are seeking the public’s assistance with this ongoing investigation. The suspect is thought to be between 25 – and 35 years of age, slim build, and drives a small black car. His MO is to park his car and walk through estates trying car doors as he goes. Unfortunately, many of the thefts are from unlocked doors."
"If you notice anyone acting suspiciously late at night in your area, please take details and report it to your local Garda Station or the crime unit at Dungarvan Garda Station."
The advice this week is around vehicle safety:
· Always lock the doors of the vehicle and ensure the alarm, if fitted is on and working.
· Don’t leave valuables on show and if possible remove them from the vehicle.
· If you have to store tools etc. in the vehicle consider enhancing the locks. There are lots of options available from your local locksmith.
· Store keys safely and away from doors and windows. Consider using a faraday bag to prevent the key’s signal from being copied, a biscuit tin would also work.
