Half a million euro has been granted to fund a new amenity in Cappoquin.
The money awarded today under the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme will go towards Phase 1 of the Cappoquin Railway Bridge Loop.
Speaking to WLR News, Director and Secretary of the Cappoquin Regeneration Company, Denis McCarthy says it's a very welcome announcement...
" It's great news for Cappoquinn. We call it the River Blackwater Amenities Project. It is for stage one of the Looped Walk over the old railway bridge. It's a section from the boathouse to the community center. We hope once that section is completed that more funding will become available for the remaining part of it.
He said, " there is significant work to be done on the bridge, it's the most expensive part of the project. The section over the old railway bridge will provide greater access and views of the river both upstream and downstream."
It's hoped work will start on the first phase of the Cappoquin trial in the next few months. The walk will bring the historic viaduct in the village back into use as a public amenity.
Denis said, "this project is also an initial part of the proposed Blueway on the River Blackwater. An assessment is being carried out by Waterford City and County Council on that project also. It's great to see so much happening in Cappoquin at the moment and a lot of money is being allocated to us through the council."
Meanwhile, over 142,000 has also been awarded for Phase 3 of the Anne Valley Walk.
This will see a 940-metre stretch south of Dunhill Castle being raised to prevent flooding.
