A councillor says it should be a "no-brainer" to grit roads outside schools - even in rural areas.

Fianna Fáil's Éamon Quinlan says only priority roads in Waterford are being gritted during the current icy snap.

Speaking to WLR News, he says rural roads are not considered a priority.

"Nobody seems to have an exact definition for a 'priority' road," he said.

"From the information I was given, it appears to include national roads, regional roads, roads that receive not only higher volumes of traffic but roads in urban centres such as Waterford City, and towns such as Dungarvan and Tramore. Unfortunately the smaller, more rural areas are not being prioratised to the best of my knowledge at this time."

Cllr Quinlan sought information on 'priority' routes.

Cllr Quinlan referenced specific rural areas such as the area around Butlerstown National School.

"I have had confirmation that it is not deemed to be a priority at the moment," he said.
