Dereliction on O’Connell Street in Waterford City needs to be addressed, according to one local representative.

At this month’s Metropolitan meeting, Councillor Frank Quinlan said that the council needs to do something about the derelict buildings from Thomas Street down to Bridge Street. Several buildings are unkempt, “really running down the whole area”, according to the Fine Gael representative.

“There are trees growing out of the upper floors, and I’m just wondering can we do something, engage with the people who own these.

“Are these people actually paying rates on these buildings? They’re so dilapidated, they’re horrendous looking.

“Only for we have Waterford Walls painting lovely murals on these walls, I don’t know what it would be like, it’s just absolutely horrendous, something needs to be done in that area of the city to bring it back and make it more vibrant.”
