Calls for creation of a Road Safety Commissioner

There are calls for the establishment of a Road Safety Commissioner, as 2023 looks set to become one of the deadliest years on Irish roads in recent times.

The number of people who have been killed on the roads has risen to 157 - following two deaths over the October Bank Holiday Weekend, including a man in his twenties on the N29 Port Road in Waterford on Saturday night.

Fine Gael TD Ciaran Cannon says there needs to be a singular body responsible for road safety.

"I'm asking for the establishment of a Road Safety Commissioner to pull together all the disparate agencies, all of which have an overall remit for road safety," he said.

Deputy Cannon said the position would be "independent, well funded and well resourced" with the aim of "determining why we continue to have such carnage on our roads".
