A local councillor has called for a crackdown on outdoor drinking and “extremely intimidating” behaviour at Ballybricken.
Fine Gael Councillor Frank Quinlan raised the issue at the July Metropolitan District meeting of Waterford City and County Council.
“Ballybricken is looking absolutely gorgeous, with new footpaths and planters installed. The grass is cut regularly. The Green looks immaculate but people can’t enjoy it in comfort,” he said.
Cllr Quinlan went on to outline some of the activities which he has observed.
This includes a group regularly engaged in the outdoor consumption of alcohol in the area.
“There’s a group that are very unsociable, they’re actually very abusive to anyone who passes,” he said.

“It’s extremely intimidating,” he added.
Cllr Quinlan is calling for a “blanket ban” on outdoor drinking in the area and the erection of signage relating to this.
Cllr Quinlan was informed that outdoor drinking in public places is a matter for An Garda Siochana.
However, he has reiterated his call for action by the local authority.
“Gardaí can intervene but can’t be out there the whole time,” he said.
“I’m seeking that a bye-law is introduced by the local authority in relation to the use, operation, protection and management of this land in Ballybricken.”
