Calls for changes to be made to road layout on N25

There are calls for the layout of the road at Carrolls Cross on the N25 to be looked at following a fatal accident there yesterday afternoon.

A man in his 70s died after a two car collision at the junction.

He was pronounced dead at the scene and a post-mortem is expected to take place today.

Local Fianna Fail Cllr John O Leary says that people living in the vicinity of Carrolls Cross have been calling for years for the road layout to be amended.

Speaking to Damien Tiernan on Deise Today John said they even took their case to Transport Infrastructure Ireland in Dublin to have this looked at:

"On two occasions [we] traveled to Dublin to meet with Transport Infrastructure Ireland but we still got back the same report, that they felt that it was a well laid out junction, it was a wide junction. If you look back on the records of every district Comeragh meeting you will see where I raised this, where other Councillors raised this. I will be asking our senior roads engineer to accompany us to Dublin again. I will be meeting people over the next few days to see can we bring more media highlight on this."

Local man Emmett Cullinane says he contacted Transport Infrastructure Ireland regarding the turn off for Dawn Meats at the same junction.

He says they were trying to pre-empt further deaths but were denied their request by the TII

"The examination of the collision statistics for the last 4 years on the N25 does not identify any problems with the location. So I got back and said look in relation to collision stats, the aim of the communication is the fact that we are trying to highlight in advance the dangerous situation. We are proactively showing there is a danger and to avoid collisions, and possibly deaths, on the road we need this solution."
