A Waterford councillor has called for increased funding to maintain one of the city's rivers.

Sinn Féin's Breda Brennan says investment is needed to allow St John's River reach its potential.

The six kilometre long river snakes its way from the Tramore Road through to Waterside before joining the River Suir.

It was described as seriously polluted in a report by the Environmental Protection Agency in 2011.

That led to the formation of a community group called Friends of St John's River.

Breda Brennan says the community activists have been helped somewhat by the Council thanks to a grant scheme.

She says the group has massively added to the vitality of the river.
