Cairde Credit Union has officially launched its Community Initiative Fund 2025, an exciting new programme aimed at supporting projects that create a lasting positive impact in local communities.
The announcement was made by Sean Cleary, CEO of Cairde Credit Union, who outlined the fund’s purpose, eligibility, and how community groups can apply.
“The Community Fund actually has a base in legislation,” explained Cleary, referring to the Credit Union Act of 1997, which allows credit unions to establish community funds once approved by their members.
“At our 2024 AGM, the directors proposed setting up a Community Fund of €200,000, and the members approved it. As a result, we’ve formed a Community Initiative Fund Committee to oversee how the fund is distributed.”
The 2025 fund will be released in two tranches, with €100,000 available in the first round of applications. Cleary said the aim is to support projects that deliver long-term benefits to local communities rather than funding short-term or operational costs.
“It’s designed for projects that will have a lasting impact,” he said. “We want to fund initiatives that leave something meaningful behind — something that strengthens the community for years to come.”
Following Cairde Credit Union’s merger with Lismore Cappoquin Credit Union and Tallow Area Credit Union, the organisation now serves a much larger common bond area covering most of mid and west Waterford, extending right down to the city. Cleary said the credit union hopes to see applications from across this expanded region.
Who Can Apply
The fund is open to a wide range of community-based organisations, including:
-
Community and voluntary groups
-
Sports clubs
-
Schools and educational institutions
-
Charities
-
Social, cultural, or environmental initiatives
“If you’re unsure whether your group qualifies, get in touch,” said Cleary. “We’re encouraging as many local organisations as possible to apply. There’s so much creativity and community spirit out there, and we want to help bring those ideas to life.”
