Bus Éireann has announced that several Expressway services will be discontinued from Sunday, 24 May 2026, citing ongoing financial losses on the affected routes. The company confirmed that the following Expressway services will be withdrawn:
  • Route 4: Waterford – Dublin / Dublin Airport
  • Route 52: Ballina – Galway
  • Route 40 (segment): Rosslare/Wexford – Waterford
Expressway operates on a fully commercial basis and does not receive State subvention. According to Bus Éireann, the decision follows “continuous significant losses” on these routes, making their operation unsustainable. The company stated that consolidating the Expressway network is necessary to protect the viability of the wider service. Despite the route closures, Bus Éireann says there will be no job losses, noting that current recruitment needs will absorb any staffing changes. Customers who have prebooked tickets on the affected services will be contacted directly and issued full refunds.
