Bunmahon Coastguard attended a callout to Stage Strand near Bunmahon.
The alarm was raised when passers-by noticed a man in difficulty at the inlet.
Brian Flemming, officer in charge with the coastguard in Bunmahon, says it was a multi-organisational rescue.
"From the shore, someone spotted the man struggling and rang 999 asking for the coastguard. Meanwhile, a local man got a rescue board and paddled out to the gentleman. As he was making his way a, lifeguard came on a rescue boat from Bonmahon Bay. Rescue 117 also attended the scene.
"Using the down blow from the Helicopter, they blew the casualty to shore. The man was handed to Bunmahon Coastguard, where we got the Helicopter to land in the field next to the cove.
"The main casualty ended up going to Waterford Airport where they went on for treatment, but unfortunately the individual who went to rescue the injured party sustained injuries himself.
"As a precautionary measure, both parties were airlifted to Waterford Airport, where they were transported to UHW for treatment of their injuries.
"We would like to thank all those on the scene, especially Bunmahon Lifeboat who responded to the callout."
