Cricket may have found a new home in Waterford. The Vikings Cricket Club based in Waterford City currently uses a space at SETU arena to play the sport.

Waterford City and County Council have signed contracts with the club for the use of a space in the Gracedieu area of Waterford City.

Planning permission is yet to be sought, however speaking to WLR News, councillor Eamon Quinlan says it's a welcomed move.

"The sport of cricket has a new home in Waterford City. I can confirm that after two years of working with the local Waterford Viking Cricket Club, as of last week, Waterford City and County Council signed contracts with the club to give them use of lands in the Gracedieu area of Waterford City, for them to play and promote the game of cricket in Waterford.

"I am delighted to say that the Waterford Viking Cricket Club is open to all and already has over 1,000 members.

"It has been active on the scene in Waterford now for the last several years, and it is already competing in regional and national championships with some of its members winning awards.

"As such, I want to make Waterford the capital of Cricket in Ireland. By planting our flag, and giving the sport grounds in which to play and promote, we can ensure that on a local and regional basis, we are the destination of choice for cricket.

"Already the club is talking to Waterford City and County Council about the development of the site. Seeking planning permission, as well as how they will go about expanding the facility such as changing rooms for all genders and installing community facilities still need to be looked into, but it will be a great addition to the neighborhood. It's a very welcomed development, that has been in the works now for a couple of years."
