BreastCheck, Ireland’s free breast cancer screening programme, has confirmed plans to bring its mobile screening unit back to Waterford in early 2026.
The service, run by the HSE, offers routine breast screening to women aged 50 to 69 who have no symptoms of breast cancer. The aim is to detect and treat cancer at the earliest possible stage. Women are typically invited for their first screening by age 52 and then every two years after that, though some may wait longer depending on when the programme is active in their area.
BreastCheck operates from four regional centres located in Cork, Galway, and two in Dublin, as well as 24 mobile units that visit 54 locations nationwide. Most women are screened at these mobile units, which remain in place until all eligible women in the area have been invited.
The mobile unit was last in Waterford at the Regional Sports Complex from August 2023 to December 2024. In 2024, screening was also available in Dungarvan. In the meantime, women in the Waterford area who are due for screening can attend appointments in either Cahir or Kilkenny.
The HSE reminds women that BreastCheck is for those without symptoms. Anyone concerned about breast changes or symptoms is urged to contact their GP.
