The latest breakdown of Covid-19 cases by Local Electoral Area paints a bleak picture with almost the entire map of Ireland coloured red.

The report from the Health Protection Surveillance Centre shows some border regions continue to have very high incidence rates, while due to the backlog of cases it's likely the figures are underestimates of the spread of the disease.

Here in Waterford, the number of cases in Tramore/Waterford City West increased by more than 500 per cent last week.

226 cases were confirmed in the area, which extends from the western outlying areas of Waterford City, through Butlerstown and south to Tramore, during the two weeks ending on Monday, up from just 34 cases the week before.

The 14-day incidence rate reached 1010.2 cases per 100,000 people, well above the national rate which was 674 at the time.

Waterford City East, which includes Dunmore East saw an almost 300 per cent increase, up from 36 cases to 138 to give an incidence rate of 600.

The number of cases in Waterford City South increased by a third to 71. The incidence rate there at 315 was more than half the national average.

County Waterford however, stands out as having the lowest incidence rates in the country.
