Aware is calling on Waterford people to become volunteers for their free support line service before the end of the year.

They are attempting to increase the number of volunteers to ensure that no call goes unanswered.

The national charity has seen a significant spike in the number of people reaching out for support and information over the past number of years. They cater to people who suffer from depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, and other related mood conditions.

If you have empathy, compassion, and just three hours a week, you are the perfect candidate. Volunteers can work from home if they please.

Volunteers will receive initial and on-going training from Aware. They will then help callers with the options and actions that are available to them as well as informing them about appropriate alternative services on offer within Aware and elsewhere.

"Volunteers are the backbone of Aware, and now more than ever, we need your help. You can make a real difference.  You can help us to be there for another person,” Stephen McBride, Director of Services at Aware said.

To apply to be a Support Line volunteer, you must be over 21 years of age and be available for three hours once a week for at least 18 months. Fluency in written and spoken English is required.

The support line operates from 10am to 10pm Monday to Sunday, 365 days of the year and is free to anyone over the age of 18.

The services also provide advice on issues relating to the caller's mood or the mood of a family member or friend who may experience depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, or related mood conditions.

Aware, which was established in 1985, is the national organisation providing free support, education, and information for people impacted by mood conditions.

If you are impacted by any of the above, you can contact Aware’s free Support Line on 1800 80 48 48.
