A 16-year-old boy has appeared before Galway District Court this morning, charged with the attempted murder of Waterford man, Fr. Paul F. Murphy at Renmore Barracks, Galway on August 15th.

The boy, who cannot be identified as a result of his age, had previously been charged with assault causing harm but the charge has since been upgraded.

The court was told that the State was making an application to withdraw the initial charge to replace it with others.

The accused is said to have made no reply to the charges and did not speak during the court appearance.

It's been directed by the Director of Public Prosecutions that the boy be sent forward for indictment at the Central Criminal Court.

He has been remanded to Oberstown Detention Centre to appear again by video link at Galway District Court next week.
