Waterford Gardaí investigating reported assault at U15 hurling match

Gardaí in Waterford are investigating an alleged assault at an under-15 hurling match in Mount Sion last night.

The U15 Division 1 Hurling match between Ballygunner and Na Risigh was ultimately abandoned after a brawl between players, backroom teams and spectators broke out in the second half.

Investigations into the incident are ongoing, and footage has been circulated widely on social media.

Gardaí confirmed to WLR News that they are actively investigating what happened:

"Gardaí are investigating a reported assault at a sportsground in Waterford city on Monday evening, 15th July 2024. Investigations are ongoing."

WLR have also contacted Bord na nÓg Port Lairge and the respective GAA clubs for comment.

In a statement to WLR, Waterford GAA outlined that they are not currently in a position to address the matter.

"Waterford GAA and Bord na nÓg will not be in a position to comment on the game in question until the Referees Report has been received and the process has been completed."
