Two people were arrested in Waterford yesterday at a checkpoint on the N25 near Lemybrien.
As part of a comprehensive Bank Holiday Road Safety campaign, Gardai from the Waterford County Community Engagement area conducted roadside tests for the presence of alcohol and drugs.
Two people tested positive and were arrested on suspicion of intoxicated driving.
They will appear before the courts at a later date.
From a national perspective, a driver was caught speeding every four minutes over the bank holiday weekend.
A road safety campaign running this weekend also caught 169 people driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
71 people have died on the roads already this year, 15 more than the same time last year.
