Aldi Waterford has appealed its planning permission with An Coimisiún Pleanála following approval for a new store in the city earlier this year.

Waterford City and County Council granted permission in February for the development at Carrickphierish Road in Gracedieu, subject to sixteen conditions.

Aldi Stores (Ireland) Limited is not appealing the overall decision. Instead, the company is seeking changes to a number of those conditions.

Details of the proposed development

The development will include a single-storey discount retail store with an off-licence. Plans also provide for parking for 85 vehicles and a loading bay.

The site will have both vehicular and pedestrian access from Carrickphierish Road. Once completed, the store will become Aldi’s sixth location in Waterford.

Conditions under appeal

The Aldi Waterford planning permission appeal focuses on specific conditions attached to the approval.

One issue relates to the omission of a proposed totem sign. Aldi argues that the signage would not harm the surrounding area and would help customers locate the store.

The company is also challenging restrictions on construction noise. It says the limits are too strict and do not reflect best practice standards. Aldi has asked for clearer and more flexible guidelines for both the construction and operational phases.

Decision expected later this year

An Coimisiún Pleanála will now review the appeal. A decision is expected by July 2026.

The outcome will determine whether the current conditions remain in place or are revised ahead of the store’s development.
