AIB branches in Waterford among those to become cashless, as demand declines

A number of AIB branches serving Waterford people are to become cashless outlets later this year, as demand for services declines.

Tramore, Lismore, Ardkeen and Carrick-on-Suir's branches are among the 70 nationwide that have been earmarked for this change.

These branches will instead focus more on mortgage, loan and saving advice for customers.

The bank will also extend its relationship with An Post so customers can access cash and cheque services.

However, Tramore councillor, Joe Conway has told WLR News it's disappointing to see AIB reducing its services in the town:

"Well, as a customer of AIB in Tramore, it just saddens me that this facility is being withdrawn.

"We do have quite a significant number of older people in Tramore who, for one reason or another, like to deal in cash and like to have that facility open to them and I think it's just part of that unfortunate trend with banking all over the world, where they want to deal with your money electronically but they don't really want to see the faces of people coming into the branches.

"I think that's very sad and regrettable."

Continuing, Councillor Conway said the move is a retrograde one for places like Tramore:

"I just think that we who are working hard every day of the week to try and maintain a sense of community, when these things are slowly fritted away on a community, it just builds up a sense of disassociation from each other and from the services that we have come to be accustomed to and to treasure over the years."

The changes will come into 36 of AIB's branches (not including the Waterford ones) on the 30th of September.

The remaining 14, which includes the Waterford outlets, will change on the 21st of October.

Councillor Conway feels there's a bigger picture to be seen here in terms of the knock-on effect to communities:

"We have an old saying in Irish, 'Ar scáth a chéile, a mhaireann na daoine' - we all live in the shadow of each other and support each other.

"It's hard to go to the bank without meeting one or two people that you know and having a bit of a chat and then you're up for a cup of coffee, or you're walking across to some other shop.

"And it does generate a whole vibrancy in the town.

"I know the bank will maintain its service to the people of Tramore but the physicality and the personal exchanges will, to a large extent, be gone when this cashless emporium comes in."
