Additional 137k to be spent helping Waterford towns and villages deal with Covid-19 challenges

Covered seating is to be provided in Grattan Square in Dungarvan this winter.

€40,000 will be spent on the semi-permanent structure to cover outdoor seating in the square.

It's one of five Co Waterford projects to benefit under the Town and Village Renewal Scheme. The focus of this year's scheme has been on providing funding for projects which support towns and villages to be more attractive, sustainable and fit for purpose in the face of the continuing pandemic.

The €4.3m announced today is in addition to €6.1 million allocated by Minister Heather Humphreys to 226 towns and villages since July under the Town and Village Renewal Scheme for COVID-19 adaptations.

Other projects in Waterford include repurposing the railway square in Tramore as an outdoor market space for commercial events.

Another semi-permanent cover is set to be erected in Passage East, €19,139 has been allocated for the covered recreation area and amenity seating there.

Elsewhere, an online platform will be developed to support local traders in the Waterford Gaeltacht, amenity seating will also be provided in key locations in the Gaeltacht.

There is also funding for improvement works to the Community Hall in Touraneena.


Waterford Fine Gael Senator John Cummins said, "Towns and villages in Waterford are at the heart of our economic and social activity and play a pivotal role in providing safe spaces for people to meet and do business as the current restrictions continue. I'd like to compliment Waterford City and County Council for putting forward proposals that are innovative and adapt to the ever-changing environment that Covid-19 presents".

He added, "The sort of initiatives that will be supported in Waterford include the semi-permanent covering of outdoor amenity and seating areas, the repurposing of certain areas to enable socially distanced market spaces and improvements to community halls".

Senator Cummins concluded by saying, "The five areas that have received funding today in this tranche is in addition the likes of Cappoquin, Tallow, Kilmacthomas, Lismore and Dunmore East that have received funding under previous rounds. I look forward to the works being carried out as quickly as possible so that they can be utilised by the public."
