Active travel improvements to Shandon Road in Dungarvan have been officially marked, following the completion of a project to improve safety and accessibility for all road users. The upgrades were delivered by Waterford City and County Council and funded by the National Transport Authority.
The upgrades include safer, more accessible footpaths, improved parking regulations, and traffic-calming measures—developments that the local community has widely welcomed. These changes are helping to encourage more walking and reduce reliance on cars, making the area around Shandon Road more people-friendly and accessible.
Locals say the improved footpaths are encouraging more residents to walk to the town centre, nearby shops, schools, parks, and even to matches along the Greenway. The enhanced pedestrian access around Fraher Field, in particular, has been credited with supporting active travel for players, spectators, and families attending games and training sessions.
The project is also seen as a positive step for local organisations and services situated along Shandon Road. With smoother and safer paths, people are finding it easier to get around on foot for everyday activities.
Groups such as Dungarvan Men’s Shed have praised the work, noting that the upgraded route is now a preferred path for walking groups and those staying active in their daily routines.
