A third person diagnosed with Covid-19 in the Republic has died.

The Department of Health confirmed the death at their briefing today.

It's believed the woman in the east of the country didn't have an underlying condition.

191 new cases in the Republic have been confirmed, bringing the total cases here to 557.

The number of cases of coronavirus in Waterford remains the same; there's 7 people with the virus here.

Dublin has the highest number of cases at 172, followed by Cork with 62.

55% of the cases in the Republic are male and 43% are female.

The median age of confirmed cases is 43.

31% of cases have been hospitalised, with 2% (7 cases) admitted to ICU.

84 cases are associated with healthcare workers.

Community transmission accounts for 35% of cases, local transmission/close contact accounts for 21%, travel abroad accounts for 43%, while 71 remain under investigation.

The Chief Medical Officer, Dr Tony Holohan, said: “I would like to extend my condolences to the family and friends of this patient.

“It is too early to see any impact of our social distancing measures. This data underscores the importance of younger people to rigorously follow public health advice and social distancing measures.”

He said he doesn't believe today's spike is due to Cheltenham.
