A protest over poor conditions at the mortuary at University Hospital Waterford took place this afternoon at UHW.

The Still Waiting Campaign say they’re supporting the four consultants who claim that decomposing bodies were being left on trolleys and the floor.

Protesters gathered outside the hospital groups with placards and banners.

Demonstrators held signs calling for health reform and criticising the larger parties, with one labelling Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil “healthcare vandals”.

Participants in today’s protest said they were shocked and angry after hearing Leo Varadkar state midweek that there was no evidence for the consultants’ claims concerning decomposing bodies.

The Taoiseach has since stated that he regrets if his comments discourage whistleblowers.

The spokesperson for the south-east’s Still Waiting group, Una Dunphy, said locals in Waterford believe and back the consultants.
