Jack and Emily are still the most popular names for new-born babies in Ireland.

New CSO figures shows 686 boys called Jack were born last year – it’s held the top spot every year since 2007 except for 2016.

For the eighth consecutive year, Emily tops the list of girl’s names.

Jack and Emily are the most popular names in Waterford City. In 2017 Noah and Mia topped the list.

In County Waterford Conor, Tadhg, Amelia and Sophie are the most popular names. Last year Jack and Fiadh were most popular.

There were 7 new entrants to the top 100 for both sexes – Frankie, Freddie, Theodore, Ada, Bella, Bonnie and Ivy.

Where both parents were Irish nationals – Jack and Grace were the most popular names.

Meanwhile Muhammad and Sophia were the top names chosen by parents who were from outside the EU.

50 years ago, John and Mary were the most common baby names in Ireland.

This year they’ve slipped down the charts to 27th and 58th place respectively.

Not one of the top 10 most popular girls’ names in 2018 were in the top 100 half a century ago.
