You still have time to post a Valentine’s Day card in time for Thursday, but it seems getting a card from a secret admirer is a thing of the past.

Waterford postman Penny Oran says Valentine’s Day is like any other day for them now.

“When I started 21 years ago, it was nearly the busiest day of the year but, now it’s not.

“Everything is done by phone now.

“I used to have girls and boys waiting at doors for me, hoping to get a mystery card from someone they like. I used to enjoy it.”

Penny Oran says there was great excitement on Valentine’s Day as people waited to see if they would get a card.

“It’s just not the same, we used to be bringing out big cards, medium cards. It used to be one of the busiest days of the year.

“People used to be winding each other up too, it was good craic, but that day is gone.”
