Reports that a new flight carrier would be in operation at Waterford Airport in the near future are premature.
That's according to the CEO of Waterford Council, who told Councillors at the recent plenary meeting, that there has been no change to the situation at the airport.
Aer Southeast posted on its Facebook page on the 23rd of February that they would begin flights this year. They said a lot of work has been done behind the scenes in order to secure the operation.
Aer Southeast said there was a long period of time when Waterford Airport was in discussions with another operator, which meant they were not in a position to progress. However, they say those things have been resolved, and Aer Southeast has now picked up were it left off.
Sinn Fein's Breda Brennan said she had been getting a lot of enquiries about the new carrier: "I've even had enquiries as far afield as England. Can management confirm reports on social media of late that Aer Southeast will soon be operating flights from Waterford Airport? If so, when is it expected that flights will commence?"
CEO Michael Walsh said work to secure a new carrier is ongoing: "That announcement was made without any discussion whatsoever with the Airport, which reflects on the merit of that announcement. Nothing has changed since I previously briefed the council in terms of what our overall strategy is there, the board collectively are working hard to try to bring us forward in the direction towards an extension to the runway there."
