Waterford City and County Council says 322 public light outages in the local area is an "acceptable level".

Outages across the city and county have been frustrating many locals, and the issue was raised at the September plenary meeting of Waterford Council.

"As of today's date, there are approximately 322 lights out. That might sound like a lot but it's only 1.8 per cent," Acting Director of Services Paul Johnston told councillors.

"You'd prefer none of them were out, but as a percentage it's quite low."

The issue of public light outages across Waterford has been ongoing, with provider Killaree Lighting Services attracting criticism.

However, Mr Johnston told councillors the issue is "not all of their making".

He went on to outline the ageing infrastructure which still exists in many parts of the city and county and the significant cost of upgrade works.
