Police are still trying to establish why a car rammed into a trade union rally in Munich yesterday.
Witnesses report that just after 10.30 am on Thursday, a white Mini sped past a police vehicle at the rear of a Verdi trade union protest, crashing into a gathering of over 1,000 protesters, primarily teachers and their kids, at 50 km/h.
At least 30 people have been injured - including some children. A 24-year-old Afghan asylum seeker has been arrested in connection with the incident.
The vehicle had been following a police escort of a protest when it sped up.
Christopher Shoots, who covers politics for the New York Times, says migration is already a major topic ahead of Germany's general election.
"There has been a string of random attacks by the last year or so mostly by male asylum seekers and this has been a worry on people's minds in Germany."
One eyewitness says everything happened quickly.
"We saw the whole demonstration, they were walking along the entire street. A car drove into the back of the crowd. I heard one or two gunshots, it sounded like it may have been the police."
