Senator John Cummins said the Department had assessed the applications carefully:

“In terms of choosing the successful projects, the Department carried out a full assessment and scored the valid application based on published criteria. I carried out a large number of zoom clinics with sports clubs across Waterford earlier this year to assist them with their applications and I am delighted to see that many of them were successful today, while many more will be awaiting the announcement of capital projects under the programme later in the year.

He added that special recognition should be given all the volunteers at club level who made the applications because they are the lifeblood of clubs and sporting organisations.

Senator Cummins added he fully understand the value of sport and physical activity:

“I will always advocate strongly for sports clubs and organisations that promote physical activity because of the positive impact they have on a daily basis. There was an added focus in this year’s programme on promoting female participation in sport which is hugely welcome because too many adolescent girls drop out of sport between the ages of 12-18. I want to wish all clubs well for the coming season and I have no doubt the money allocated today will be put to very good use by clubs on the ground."
