146 arrests nationally for drink or drug driving on May Bank Holiday

Gardai made 88 arrests for drinking driving and a further 58 for driving under the influence of drugs over the May Bank Holiday weekend.

Additionally there were 2,298 detections for speeding offences over the same period, 85 people were caught using mobile phones while driving, 47 people were detected not wearing seatbelts.

41 vehicles driven by unaccompanied learner drivers were seized, while 96 vehicles were seized for having no insurance displayed with seven people arrested in connection with this offence.

Assistant Commissioner Paula Hilman, Roads Policing and Community Engagement said: "I want to reiterate our appeal to all road users to continue to take personal responsibility and play their part in keeping our roads safe. As can be seen from the high number of detections and arrests over the May Bank Holiday Weekend, An Garda Síochána remains committed to ensuring compliance with road traffic legislation to improve safety on our roads."
