A man has been assaulted with a machete during an aggravated burglary at his home in St Herblain park in Waterford.

The incident happened just after three o'clock this morning (Monday) when a knock on the door was answered to a male with a machete.

The assailant is alleged to have barged into the house assaulting the victim, and attempting to assault a woman also.

The 32 year old man received serious but not life-threatening injuries, including a deep laceration to his upper thigh and knee cap, the female received a minor scratch on her hand.

Emergency services attended the scene, which has been sealed off pending a technical examination.

No arrests have been made and Gardai are asking any witnesses to contact them at Waterford garda station.
