A group of friends are undertaking a cycle around Ireland in memory of the 4 crew who tragically lost their lives on the 14th of March 2017 when the Dublin based Irish Coast Guard Helicopter R116 crashed off the Mayo Coast.

The cycle has been named 4 Days in September #neverforgotten.

Cyclists left Waterford Airport this morning and will cycle to Dublin Airport, Sligo Airport and Shannon Airport arriving back in Waterford on the 11th of September. The 11th of September is an important day in Waterford City because the Holy Family Church hosts the 9/11 mass in memory of Twin Towers terror attack.

The group of friends are all members of the emergency services who work alongside the Irish Coast Guard on a daily basis and who would have been friendly with some of the helicopter crew who lost their lives.

Each Day will have a separate significance with Day one remembering Dara Fitzpatrick, Day 2 remembering Paul Ormsby, Day 3 remembering Ciarán Smith and Day 4 in remembrance of Mark Duffy.

Each day will also have a different charity associated with it, as follows:

  • Dunmore East First Responders
  • Dogs for the Disabled
  • Pieta House South East
  • Aoibheann’s Pink Tie
