Gardai in Waterford say an increasing number of people in the City and County are failing drug driving tests.

On Friday last a driver in Waterford was arrested after being detected driving 60km/h above the speed limit.

A Roads Policing Unit detected the vehicle travelling at 158kph in a 100kph area.

The driver subsequently tested positive for cocaine and was arrested with court proceedings to follow.

Figures released late last year show that 68% of drivers with a positive roadside drug test, had a positive test for cannabis.

37% of samples tested being positive for cocaine.

The force is to continue to check drink driving and they are now using drug detection equipment a lot more at the moment.

The Medical Bureau of Road Safety findings show that cannabis is, now, not far behind alcohol in blood and urine samples it examined.

Sergeant James Twomey from the Roads Policing Unit in Waterford says drugs will stay in the system much longer than alcohol.

He says they are committed to keeping road traffic fatalities and serious collision to an absolute minimum.
