Waterford publican says he welcomes Garda spot checks in pubs over the weekend

Concerns have been raised about large crowds gathering in Dublin city centre last night.

Images on social media show dozens of people outside bars and pubs in Dublin city centre.

Only pubs which serve food are currently allowed open, with gardaí carrying out spot checks to make sure the guidelines are followed.

People are being urged to follow social distancing if they do head out.

Operation Navigation which involves spot-checks on pubs to ensure compliance with guidelines is continuing to take place today

Waterford pub owner Jim Flash Gordon,  of Oskars and Revolution Bar says Gardai have been paid regular visits to his premises this weekend.

"They come in now and again, just walk in, check is everything ok and check with the manager, take a quick two minute look around and back out again. We're very compliant, The garda spot checks are just one step more in making customers feel safe and it just helps put people's mind at rest that that's there.

He says because of earlier closing times, there were no scenes of street gatherings in Waterford City Centre last night.

"The city centre was reasonably quiet last night. I went home last night at half past ten and there was nobody on the streets at that time."
