Micheál Martin will be elected Taoiseach today at a special sitting of the Dáil.

It comes after the members of Fine Gael, Fianna Fáil and the Green Party voted to support the programme for government yesterday.

In the end it was a healthy margin of more than 3 to 1 that saw Fine Gael, Fianna Fail and the Greens agree to go into government.

Today Micheál Martin will realise his political dream, and be elected Taoiseach.

It's expected he'll have the 84 votes of the three parties - but also the support of a number of independent TDs.

The Dáil sits at 10.30 in the Convention Centre to allow for social distancing and it's expected the Fianna Fáil leader will be elected Taoiseach around lunchtime.

After getting his seal of office from President Michael D Higgins it will be back to government buildings where he'll appoint the cabinet chosen by himself, Leo Varadkar and Eamon Ryan.

The Dáil will vote through the appointments, before the new cabinet will get their seals of office at a socially distant ceremony in Dublin Castle.

It will be a day of firsts.

The first Dáil sitting in the Convention Centre.

The first Fine Gael - Fianna Fáil coalition.

The first time a sitting Taoiseach in Leo Varadkar has stepped down to the role of Tánaiste.

And the first Cork Taoiseach since Jack Lynch in the late 70s.
