Waterford City and County playgrounds will not reopen today under phase two of the lifting of restrictions.

It comes after the Government announced on Friday that they could reopen if they were supervised.

Playgrounds across the country have been closed since lockdown restrictions were introduced to combat the spread of the coronavirus in mid-March

Some local authorities had interpreted the guidance as supervision from parents, while others have taken it to mean supervision by council staff, which local authorities are not in a position to provide.

Waterford City and Council is looking for clarification on the issue.

It is also unknown what level of cleansing would be required for the playground equipment, and how it could be assured that fewer than 15 children would be using the park at any time.

The local authority requires clarification on what constitutes a supervised playground with controlled access.

Director of Services with Waterford Council Fergus Galvin says providing supervision would be impossible at the moment.
