11 hate-related incidents occurred in Waterford in 2021.

Victims were subject to hate crimes because of their age, ethnicity, gender, race, and whether they had a disability.

Murder threats, assaults causing harm, and criminal damage are just a few things victims suffered.

"The release of figures today is the first following the introduction of new procedures, introduced under the Garda Diversity and Integration Strategy, which have enabled the establishment of a verified baseline to be used from 2021 onwards," Assistant Commissioner Paula Hilman, whose remit includes the Garda National Diversity and Integration Unit, said.

Nationally, 448 hate crimes or hate-related incidents occurred.

The largest proportion of hate-related incidents (50%) reported in 2021 occurred in the Dublin Metropolitan Region.

Race was the most common motivation for the crimes.

Sexual orientation was the second most common reason followed by nationality.

The statistics were released by An Garda Siochana today.
