The Waterford Youth Council, or Comhairle na nÓg, developed an app giving people a virtual tree that grows and results in a real tree being planted.
The app called MyCommunitree aims to get more young people involved in planting trees. The idea came up during the pandemic when the group worked on the theme of Climate Change and how they can benefit from their own community.
"I think this App is an amazing achievement for the group and we hope that more young people and adults in Waterford will download the app and more trees are planted," Amy Doherty, Comhairle na nÓg coordinator, said.
The group also worked with the forestry department at the South East Technological University to create the Native Tree Trail in Carraignore where over 1,500 trees have been planted.
They also worked with Waterford City and County Council and the Lions Club Tree For Life to develop the Neighbourwood project.
This saw over 2,000 trees being planted in Cherrymount earlier this year. The trees were donated by Coillte.
The Youth Council is managed by Waterford and South Tipperary Community Youth Service. They are a group of young people between the ages of 12 and 18 from all over the county.
