Mount Sion CBS Secondary School in Waterford will feature on the RTE programme Nationwide this evening (Monday) at 7pm.
In December 2020, the school became the first in the Republic to be designated a School of Sanctuary status, following an assessment process undertaken by the Places of Sanctuary Ireland charity (PoSI).
Mount Sion CBS, which boasts one of the country's most famous choirs, is known for its multi-culturalism, with students of 37 nationalities attending.
At the time of awarding the status, the Schools of Sanctuary Ireland said:
The school was assessed by a team of monitors including people active in refugee support work, refugees and asylum seekers, and was judged to be “outstanding” in terms of its commitment and activities for welcoming and including young people from a refugee or asylum-seeking background. A few days later, it was followed by the equally impressive Bunscoil Loreto, a Primary School in Gorey that is pioneering this all-important message of sanctuary for all
