We recently caught up with April Brophy Mountain leader of Sliabh Hiking who sent us on 3 Family-Friendly Walks to Enjoy Over Christmas in Waterford

Christmas is the perfect time to get outdoors, stretch your legs, and enjoy Waterford's stunning landscapes. Whether you want to shake off the post-dinner slump or simply spend quality time with loved ones, these three family-friendly walks are ideal for all ages and abilities. So, lace up your boots, grab a flask of hot chocolate, and discover some festive magic on the trails!

1. The Waterford Greenway: Kilmeaden to Kilmacthomas

Distance: 10 km (one way)
Difficulty: Easy
Duration: 2-3 hours

The Waterford Greenway is a must-visit for families over the Christmas season. For a manageable section that’s both scenic and child-friendly, I recommend the route from Kilmeaden to Kilmacthomas. This beautiful stretch of the Greenway features gentle gradients, making it ideal for little ones or those pushing a buggy.

Along the way, you will pass through peaceful countryside, stone bridges, and sweeping views of the Comeragh Mountains. Do not miss the picturesque Kilmacthomas Viaduct—a great spot for a family photo! Finish in Kilmacthomas where you can reward yourselves with a warm cuppa or festive treat in one of the local cafes.

2. Mahon Falls Walk, Comeragh Mountains

Distance: 4 km (return)
Difficulty: Easy to Moderate
Duration: 1-1.5 hours

For families seeking a bit more adventure, Mahon Falls in the Comeragh Mountains is a perfect choice. This short but stunning walk starts from the car park and leads you to the breathtaking waterfall, cascading down a rocky cliff face.

The trail is easy to follow and flat, though sturdy footwear is recommended for any wet or uneven ground. Keep an eye out for sheep grazing nearby and the famous “Magic Road”—a quirky stop where cars appear to roll uphill (a fun mystery to entertain the kids!).

The combination of fresh mountain air and spectacular views makes this a festive crowd-pleaser that the whole family will enjoy.

3. Lough Mohra Walk, Comeragh Mountains

Distance: 5 km loop
Difficulty: Moderate
Duration: 1.5-2 hours

The Lough Mohra Walk offers a magical blend of forest trails, mountain views, and tranquil lakeside scenery. Starting at Glenpatrick Woods, this circular trail gently ascends through enchanting woodland before opening to spectacular views of the Comeragh Mountains.

The highlight of the walk is Lough Mohra itself, a serene mountain lake surrounded by rugged cliffs and peaceful beauty. It is an ideal spot for a rest and some festive snacks. The return journey loops back through the forest, providing a perfect mix of adventure and tranquillity for families.

This walk is slightly more challenging than the others but is well worth the effort for its scenery and peaceful atmosphere.

Tips for a Successful Family Walk:

  • Dress for the weather: Layers, hats, and gloves are key for winter walking.
  • Pack snacks and drinks: A little treat goes a long way for younger walkers!
  • Leave no trace: Take any rubbish with you and respect the natural beauty.
  • Take your time: Enjoy the views, the fresh air, and most importantly—each other’s company.

So, this Christmas, escape the indoors and make unforgettable memories on Waterford’s trails. Whether it is a peaceful Greenway stroll, a magical mountain waterfall, or a serene lakeside walk, there is a walk for everyone to enjoy. From all of us at Sliabh Hiking, happy walking and a very Merry Christmas!
