Here in Waterford, we're getting a clearer picture of how the City and County have voted in General Election 2020

The exit poll had predicted a three-way tie between Fine Gael, Sinn Fein and Fianna Fáil.

However, the tallies locally have Sinn Fein surging ahead with David Cullinane on 38% as the tallies near completion.

David Cullinane told WLR's Damien Tiernan that they felt they could do well but didn't see this coming

"We certainly didn't see us getting almost two quotas in Waterford so, it's an extraordinary result.

"Hindsight is great, but, we are where we are, we have an extraordinary result and there's a message now I think for Mary Butler, for Damien Geoghegan, for John Cummins, for Eddie Mulligan, for all of those candidates in Fianna Fail and Fine Gael to wake up to a new reality that Sinn Fein cannot be excluded from government.

"Look at the vote that we got, are they seriously going to tell 40% of the electorate in Waterford that their vote is not good enough?

"I think politics has changed, really dramatically here today and that's what's really heartwarming, it's bigger than Sinn Féin."

WLR will be live from the count centre at WIT until the very last vote is counted.
