Bridie became pregnant aged 20 and ran away from home with the "shame" of it.

She turned up at the Bessborough facility in Co Cork and told Deise Today that she has been "haunted" by the memories of it since.

From babies being taken from their mothers' arms, to babies dying in the facility, Bridie described to Damien Tiernan some of the horrific things she had experienced in her time at Bessborough.

She gave birth to her son in March 1973 and said she was lucky enough to be able to leave there with him a few days later.

She pointed out that she often hears the residents being described as women in the media but says in reality, anyone there was only "a girl".

At 20, she remembers being amongst the oldest when she was a resident in 1973.
