1. Special schools to re-open February 11th
The cabinet sub-committee on Education is meeting this evening to discuss the options being considered for this year’s Junior and Leaving Certificates. Earlier it was confirmed that special schools are set to re-open from Feb 11th with 50% capacity and special classes to follow on the 22nd after agreement between govt and unions.

2. Former Kilkenny mayor lambasts Waterford ‘Cinderella’ attitude on university issue
Paul Cuddihy, who was a FG councillor for Kilkenny , said Waterford sometimes portrays itself as “Cinderella” in terms of not getting what it wants but the narrative of “always the bridesmaid and never the bride” is not helpful. 3. New car sales fall 18% in January
New car sales fell 17.8 per cent in January compared to the same month last year as the motor trade faced lockdown restrictions that limited sales operations to ‘Click-and-deliver’ services. However, there was a rise in used car imports, despite the impact of Brexit.
4. Calls to make Lá Fhéile Bríde a public holiday
Críostóir Ó Faoláin, the Green Party Local Area Rep for Dungarvan, says “The longest period without a bank holiday on the Irish calendar is the stretch from New Year’s Day, January 1st to St. Patrick’s Day, 17th of March. This is also one of the most depressing times of the year, with Winter celebrations over and daylight hours in short supply. The 1st of February is a perfect day to welcome the Spring and the return of light.”
5. Waterford Gardai want to recognise extraordinary young people

6. Waterford writer’s debut novel selected as one of 10 best novelists of 2021
The debut novel by Waterford writer Megan Nolan has been selected as one of the ten best debut novels of 2021 by the Observer newspaper. ‘Acts of Desperation‘ is set to be published on March 4th this year.
