1. Harris: Kilkenny HQ claim was ‘misinformation, disinformation and downright nonsense’
The Minister for Higher Education has again quashed rumours about the headquarters of the new Technological University of the South East. There has been speculation that the HQ would be located in Kilkenny since the inaugural meeting of the Regional Engagement Advisory Group in January. However, Simon Harris says there is no truth to the rumours. He was responding to questions from Waterford’s Marc Ó Cathasaigh and David Cullinane in an Oireachtas Committee.
2. Waterford primary principal “delighted” about classroom return but warns vigilance is needed
Brid Golden, principal of St John Of God National School in the city, said the last six or seven weeks has been very difficult for parents, pupils and for teaching staff and she was “welcoming” the return to school of junior infants through to second class from next Monday. However, she also said there were a lot of “unknowns” at the moment regarding the new variants of Covid in circulation and the last thing anybody wanted was further school closures in the future.
3. Arrests after Dublin salon opens for second day under Level 5 restrictions
Two people have been arrested after a Dublin beauty salon opened its doors for the second day in a row, despite Level 5 restrictions. The owner of C and N Beauty Rooms in Balbriggan reopened the salon at 11am this morning, despite being ordered to close yesterday by gardaí.
4. Tiger Woods at beginning of long road to recovery, leading surgeon says
Tiger Woods is at the “beginning of a long road” to recovery after a car crash which left the 15-time major winner with serious injuries to his right leg, according to leading sport surgeon Prof Bill Ribbans. Woods (45) was extricated from the wreck in Los Angeles on Tuesday and had an operation where open fractures to his tibia and fibula and injuries to his foot and ankle were stabilised with the insertion of a rod, screws and pins.
5. Waterford FC announces new signings
Waterford FC announced three new signings today. Dubliner Cian Kavanagh signed with the Blues, having spent time with Hearts and Cowdenbeath FC in Scotland. Kavanagh started his footballing journey with St. Patrick’s Athletic before joining the Hearts U18s back in 2019. James Waite also joins the Blues on loan from Cardiff City FC for the 2021 campaign and will link up with his Under-19 international teammate Cameron Evans. Defender Jamie Mascoll also joins the club, on loan from Bolton Wanderers until the end of the season.
6. Ollie and Mary hear about an EGG-xtra special hen in West Waterford
Ollie and Mary on The Big Breakfast Blaa got an EGGstraordinary surprise today when they spoke to Shirley Walsh from Cushcam in Dungarvan, about the feats of Brownie, a family hen. Shirley's 10 year old son Odhran has been rearing hens at home, after the chicks were born last year. They started to lay in December and Brownie, one of the hens in question, produced a whopper-sized egg in the past week.
